Why a window freezes at the bottom

Something always sits under the frame. In a standard installation that is a hollow plastic support profile: it carries the frame and conducts cold from outside into the room at the same time.

In frost the bottom joint becomes the coldest surface in the room. Then the chain: condensation on the reveal, ice along the junction, black spots in the corner a season or two later.

The call about that does not go to the profile maker. It goes to whoever fitted the window.

What changes in the node

  1. A VSThermo profile goes under the frame in place of the standard support profile. Material — EPS at 150 kg/m³, thermal conductivity 0.04 W/(m·K).

  2. Hybrid polymer bonds the profile to the base and closes the joint.

  3. Tape seals the junction with the wall.

Mounting height follows the node: 30 mm for an ordinary bottom junction, 45 mm under increased load, 100 mm under door thresholds. Operational length of the profile — 1180 mm.

The prewall systems VST 80×90 and VST 80×140 solve a different problem. They carry the frame out of the load-bearing wall plane into the insulation layer by 90 or 140 mm, so the junction never reaches cold material.

Which profile you need

Support profiles

7 sizes for the bottom junction of windows and doors. Width from 50 to 69 mm follows the mounting width of your profile system.

VST 63×100 stands apart: it is designed for door thresholds and sliding systems, where the node is taller and the load runs differently.

Pre-wall frame systems

VST 80×90 and VST 80×140 — for the case where the window sits in the insulation layer rather than the load-bearing wall. Offset of 90 or 140 mm.
